Version Numbering Converter

by CroaBeast

Version Numbering Converter is a Java 8 library that converts Minecraft version names between the classic and year-based numbering families.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltLiteLoaderClient or server, optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen sourcerd-132211 – 26.2

What it does

The library works with Minecraft versions from both numbering families: the classic scheme that runs through the 1.x releases, and the newer year-based scheme. A developer can read a version in one scheme and get its equivalent in the other, which helps when older version names have to be mapped to newer ones or the reverse.

The common API is kept separate from platform code, so a Java project can use it without a Bukkit classpath. Platform-specific runtime helpers live in their own modules and are picked through a bootstrap provider. The bootstrap class detects the runtime, and the library still exposes convenience methods that use the detected provider. Where no provider is supported, a nullable accessor returns nothing. On Velocity, the provider exposes one global backend Minecraft version, and version methods there need a system property set before use. The final consumer jar is generated from the bootstrap module.

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt and LiteLoader, and for the Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, Purpur, Folia, Sponge, Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall server platforms. Builds cover rd-132211 – 26.2 across 172 release versions, and snapshot builds are published as well. The library is used on the client or server side, and neither side is required to run it. It is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and is open source.

Key features

  1. Two numbering families

Both the classic 1.x scheme and the year-based scheme are handled, including the newest releases.

  2. Java 8 common API

The shared API targets Java 8 and is kept free of Bukkit classes so it can sit on any classpath.

  3. Runtime provider detection

A bootstrap provider detects the platform at runtime and selects the matching helper module.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Developers who write Java tools or plugins that handle Minecraft version names across both numbering families, and server owners who run plugins built on the library.

Questions

Which numbering families does the library handle?

It handles the classic 1.x scheme and the year-based scheme, covering releases from rd-132211 through 26.2.

Does a Velocity setup need extra configuration?

Yes. On Velocity the version methods need a system property set, because the provider exposes one global backend Minecraft version.

Does the library need a Bukkit classpath?

No. The common API is split out so a Java project can use it without a Bukkit classpath, while platform helpers sit in separate modules.

What the author says

The project is split so the common API can be used from any Java project without Bukkit on the classpath. Platform-specific runtime helpers live in separate modules and are selected through the bootstrap provider. Platform modules contain package-private provider implementations.
