YANDO's Villager Names

by OverlordsIII

Villagers and iron golems on a Fabric server receive random names, and YANDO's Villager Names controls how those names are generated and formatted.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.16.4 – 1.21

What it does

On first boot, every villager that spawns in a world is assigned a name drawn from a list of more than 6000 entries. Iron golems can receive robot names instead. Config options add the villager's profession to its name once it takes one, append a " the Child" tag to children, and change the text shown for nitwits. Names can be rendered in several text styles.

The root command is /villagername, and it covers renaming and changing the settings. Some of these commands need a server restart before they take effect. On a dedicated server the command system is used; on an integrated singleplayer world a settings screen provides the same controls. When a villager turns into a zombie, its profession name is removed and a Zombie tag is applied.

The mod is published for Fabric only, for the game versions 1.16.4 – 1.21, and it is open source under the MIT License. Only the server needs it, and players join without installing anything.

Key features

  1. Random villager names

Each villager spawning in a new world receives a name from a list of over 6000 options.

  2. Profession in names

A villager's profession can be shown alongside its name once it gets one, controlled by a config option.

  3. Child and golem tags

Children can carry a " the Child" tag, and iron golems can be given robot names.

  4. Name styling

Villager names can be formatted into several text styles, and the nitwit text can be customized.

  5. Command and settings control

A /villagername command handles changes on dedicated servers, and an in-game settings screen does the same in singleplayer.

Use cases

Immersive trading villages

Server owners who want villagers to read as individuals can name every trader and cartographer at spawn.

Iron farm servers

Players who run iron farms can keep track of which villager is which by the names and professions they show.

Who it’s for: Server owners who run Fabric servers and want named villagers, and players who prefer a more personal village without adding nametags by hand.

What the author says

When playing Minecraft, we encounter a vast array of Mobs. Most of them are either passive or aggressive. However, only two can be considered your allies: the tamed wolves and the Villagers (No, cats don't count. They really don't care about you). Villagers are very useful, albeit a bit dumb sometimes. We rely on…
