Treeplacer
Saplings in Treeplacer can grow different trees depending on the biome or the block they are planted on, as set by datapack files that the server loads.
What it does
Treeplacer is a datapack-driven world generation mod. A custom datapack lets a sapling grow whichever tree the author declares, and the choice can depend on the biome where the sapling is grown or on the block beneath it. A rule can apply to every sapling in every biome, or only to certain biomes, so one sapling type can produce several trees across a world.
The mod also defines 2x2 trees that follow the same rules and apply to all saplings, including the mushroom ones. Advanced rules extend the sapling override format for more detailed setups. Treeplacer is open source under the MIT License, and the author documents the sapling override file format on the project wiki, with the source code also published publicly. Treeplacer runs on client and server, so both sides need it. It is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 16 release versions, 1.19 – 26.2.
Key features
Global sapling overrides
A sapling can be set to grow one tree in every biome, with a single rule in the datapack.
Biome-based trees
The tree a sapling grows can change with the biome it is planted in.
Block-based trees
The tree can also depend on the block the sapling is grown on, such as a particular ground type.
2x2 tree definitions
Trees with a 2x2 footprint can be defined and used on every sapling, mushrooms included.

Use cases
Biome-specific forests
Map makers and modpack authors can give a sapling different trees in different biomes so the landscape changes as players travel.
Compatibility with biome addons
Datapacks for biome addons can be paired with sapling overrides to match new biomes with suitable trees.
Who it’s for: Datapack authors, modpack makers and server owners who want saplings to produce custom or biome-specific trees without writing a Java mod.
