The Wastes | Custom Overworld from the Wastes SMP

by kanokarob

The Wastes adds a custom overworld for servers, where desolate terrain, scarce resources and new threats replace the standard surface of the world.

What it does

The worldgen pack reshapes the surface of the overworld into a wasteland. Villages may be abandoned and carry zombie variants, farm animals such as horses appear on sand, red sand and terracotta, and husks, parched and camel husk jockeys spawn in the new biomes. Rivers have dried into riverbeds and warm oceans have been emptied, while caves are more common and stretch wider across the surface and the bottom of the world.

Ores stay close to vanilla, with a Blackstone layer added underground. Bonemeal used on grass blocks in these biomes produces noise-based random flowers that resemble the vanilla flower. The mod is a server requirement, so servers must run it and players may add it to their clients. It is distributed under a custom license, and the code is not open source.

The content is built as a data pack that was created for the Wastes SMP, a server hosted by emchmu. The author reports that over 40 Minecraft creators took part on the server, and that the survived world lasted only 30 real days. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, covering game versions 1.21.11 – 26.3 across five release versions.

Key features

  1. Desolate overworld terrain

Biomes are reworked into a dry wasteland, with scarce resources spread across the surface.

  2. Abandoned villages

Villages appear abandoned and include zombie variants that change how exploration feels.

  3. Dried waterways

Rivers become riverbeds and warm oceans are emptied, so water is hard to find.

  4. Expanded caves

Caves are more common and reach further across the surface and the bottom of the world.
