The Sound of Raindrums

by JShep

The Sound of Raindrums adds seven tuned percussion blocks that play a sound only while it is raining, for players who stand near a noteblock during a storm.

ForgeClient-side onlyMIT License1.20.1 – 1.20.4

What it does

Noteblocks play their usual random sounds, matched to the block underneath each one, as in vanilla Minecraft. The mod adds a second layer on top of this: while it rains, a noteblock can also sound a raindrum. Each raindrum is a block that plays a sound tied to a specific material, so a gold block bell, a clay flute or a packed ice chime each gives its own tone during a storm.

The sounds fire at random and only when rain is falling, so the effect is heard in the open rather than under cover. A player has to stand close to a noteblock to hear it clearly. The mod is built for Forge 1.20.1, 1.20.2 and 1.20.4, and the 1.0 file covers all three, released on 2025-08-30. Forge must be installed and the file placed in the mods folder before the game is started in rain.

Key features

  1. Rain-triggered noteblock sounds

A noteblock also sounds its raindrum when rain falls, using the block placed directly underneath it.

  2. Gold block bell and clay flute

Gold blocks ring like a bell, and clay produces a flute tone, each assigned to a separate raindrum.

  3. Xylophone and chime raindrums

Bone blocks, iron blocks and emerald blocks give xylophone, chime and bit sounds, and soul sand adds a cow bell.

  4. Pumpkin didgeridoo

A pumpkin block underneath a noteblock produces a didgeridoo tone during rain.

Use cases

Rainy builds and ambient scenes

Players who build music rooms or outdoor scenes can place raindrums in the open so that storms add a changing layer of sound.

Who it’s for: Players who like decorative music in survival or creative worlds, and builders who want weather to affect their noteblock setups.

How it compares

Full comparison

Stop Fing Raining is another Forge option that ties sound to rain, but it runs client and server and is released under the MIT License for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6. Noteblock Backport is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, but it is client and server, and it targets 1.12.2 alone.

Questions

Does The Sound of Raindrums need to be installed on the server?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Which Minecraft versions does the mod support?

The 1.0 Forge file covers 1.20.1, 1.20.2 and 1.20.4. Its game version range is 1.20.1 – 1.20.4, with three release versions in total.

What is needed before the sounds play?

Forge must be installed, the mod file placed in the mods folder, and the game started during rain, because the raindrum sounds only trigger while it is raining.
