The Dark Forest
The Dark Forest is a Forge survival mod that makes the game harder, with bleeding, traps, skill orbs and nightly events added to vanilla play.
What it does
Bleeding temperature mechanics make the player lose health over time unless bandages stop the bleeding effect. Traps deal damage and apply slowness, while biome-specific structures carry their own loot tables. Nightly events bring more ambushes and thunderstorms to players who stay out after dark.
Skill orbs open research on a set of items, and the research tree shows which orbs each item requires. Heart containers raise the maximum health limit by five extra hearts. The mod is built for players who want a more punishing version of the vanilla experience, and it can be combined with the three-lives hardcore setup where a lost life sends the player to spectator mode.
The Dark Forest is published for Forge only, for 1.18.2 and 1.19.2, with 1.3.8 for 1.19.2 as the latest file, on the alpha channel. It runs server-side only, so players join without installing it, and it is released under All rights reserved, which means it is not open source.

How it compares
Simple Hearts is client and server, open source under the BSD 3-Clause License, and published for 1.16.5 – 1.20.1, so it covers a different range than The Dark Forest and needs installing on both sides. Various medications is client and server, not open source, and covers 1.19.2 – 1.20.1, giving it a version overlap with The Dark Forest on 1.19.2.
