Terrarium
by lynxs
With Terrarium, a world can be generated from real elevation data, so the terrain follows real places instead of random noise.
What it does
Terrarium is a world generator for Minecraft that builds terrain from real elevation data. Each map pixel maps to one Minecraft block, and tiles of 256×256 pixels load dynamically as the player moves through the generated world. Players pick the terrarium:terrarium world type when creating a world, open its customize settings and adjust terrain options per world.
The elevation tiles are fetched from a hosted source, and the terrain is shaped from those tiles at the chosen zoom level. A zoom level sets how many tiles cover each axis as 2 to the power of the zoom, so higher zooms give more detail across a larger area. At zoom 8, the mod covers 256 tiles of 256×256 blocks, which is 65,536 blocks wide.
The mod runs on the server, so players join without installing anything. It requires Architectury API and Fabric API, and is published for Fabric and NeoForge. Builds cover 1.20 – 1.21.8 across 16 release versions, and the latest files target 1.21.8.
Key features
Real elevation terrain
Worlds are generated from real elevation data, producing terrain that follows the shape of actual places.
Terrarium world type
A world type appears when creating a world, so earth-style generation is chosen from the usual creation screen.
Zoom-based tile system
Zoom sets the tile count per axis, and each 256×256 tile is one 256×256 block area in the game.
Per-world customization
Terrain settings can be changed for each world, so the same generator produces different results across saves.
