SubTick

by lntricate1

SubTick is a Fabric utility that extends Carpet with finer control over how a single game tick is advanced, one phase or one queued element at a time.

FabricServer required, client optionalGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.17 – 1.20.1

What it does

Carpet is required, and SubTick builds on its rules and commands rather than replacing them. The extension lets a server operator freeze or unfreeze the game just before a chosen tick phase, step a given number of ticks that end right before that phase, or step through phases forward within the current tick or the next one. Tick stepping works with tick step 0 to resolve a later phase inside the same tick.

The queueStep command advances through a count of queued elements, either inside the current tick or on the next tick, and an unlimited range can be set with -1. Fluid ticks, block ticks, block events, entities and block entities can be stepped individually, and block events can be stepped through whole depths or by block tick priorities. A client-side HUD shows highlights for the elements being processed.

Only the server needs SubTick for its stepping commands to take effect, while a player may add it and joining clients can leave it out. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only. It is published for Fabric only, across 8 release versions 1.17 – 1.20.1, with 2.1.1 for 1.20.1 as the latest file. Source code and an issue tracker are publicly linked.

Key features

  1. Tick freeze and step by phase

Freeze or unfreeze the game right before a chosen tick phase, or step a count of ticks ending just before it.

  2. Phase stepping

Advance a count of phases forward, with an option to force the step onto the next tick when needed.

  3. Queue stepping

Step through a count of queued elements within a configurable range, or set the range to unlimited with -1.

  4. Block event and block tick modes

Block events can be stepped through whole depths, and block ticks can be stepped by their priorities, using an indexed mode.

  5. Client highlights HUD

A HUD overlay on the client highlights the elements being stepped, which helps follow each change.

Questions

Does SubTick require Carpet?

Yes. Carpet is the only required dependency, and SubTick extends its rules and commands.

Does every player need SubTick installed?

No. Only the server needs it to run the stepping commands, so the server runs it while joining clients may leave it out.

Which game versions does SubTick support?

Fabric files exist for 1.17 – 1.20.1, across 8 release versions including 1.17.1, 1.18.2 and 1.19.4, and the latest file is 2.1.1 for 1.20.1.
