Substrate
Substrate removes the hidden faces of the bottom and top layers of the world, so the client draws fewer polygons in Sodium-based setups.
What it does
The mod targets the bottom layer of the Overworld and the bottom and top layers of the Nether, where faces are usually out of sight. Those faces are drawn again only when a player can actually see them. Although the mod is themed around Bedrock, it does not check block types, so it can help on floating island worlds and mini game servers as well.
Substrate is a fork of Bedrodium by kirillirik and requires Fabric API and Sodium. The mod is published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt across 17 release versions, 1.20.1 – 1.21.11, and is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, so it is open source.
Key features
Hidden face removal
Faces on the bottom and top layers that a player cannot see are left out of the render.
Visibility on demand
Hidden faces become visible only in situations where a player needs to see them.
Block-type independent
The optimization applies by layer position, not by block type, so any world with those layers can benefit.
