SpatialAudio changes how sound is computed in Minecraft, using a parallel wave tracing method to model how audio reflects and spreads through a space.

What it does

Sound in the game is recalculated with a physics-based approach. The mod traces sound waves in parallel, aiming for more realistic audio behavior across the environment. Only the client needs the mod, so servers run without it and players are the only side that hears the change.

The mod is built for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 1.20 and 1.20.1 published as 1.0.0-bc14 on 2026-01-28 under the alpha channel. Cloth Config API and Mod Menu are required and must be installed alongside it. Its code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.

Key features

  1. Wave tracing audio

Sound waves are traced in parallel to estimate how audio travels and reflects through the world.

  2. Physics-based sound

An improved physics algorithm shapes how sound is heard, aiming for more realistic audio in game.

  3. Alpha builds

Current files are alpha builds, so some experimental features may behave unpredictably.
