SoundSwitcher

by Seniye

SoundSwitcher lets players pick the audio output device from inside the in-game sound settings on Minecraft 1.7.10.

ForgeClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.7.10

What it does

On startup, SoundSwitcher asks OpenAL for the list of available audio output devices and shows that list in the Music & Sounds menu, with a Device button added to the screen. Selecting an entry reinitializes the OpenAL context so game audio goes to the chosen output at once, without a restart or editing config files. The device names are displayed as OpenAL reports them, which can show garbled text on systems with non-English names.

If the selected device is disconnected during play, the mod falls back to the system default device so game audio does not go silent. The feature is a backport of the device switcher that newer game versions received, adding the same button to the Music & Sounds menu on 1.7.10.

SoundSwitcher requires UniMixins. It is a Forge mod for 1.7.10 only, with the single file 1.0.0 published on 2026-05-22. The mod is client-side only, so the server can run vanilla or modded content without it, and it is released under the MIT License as open source, with the source code publicly available.

Key features

  1. Device enumeration

The mod queries OpenAL at startup and lists every available audio output device in the sound settings.

  2. Live switching

Choosing a device reinitializes the OpenAL context, moving game audio to that output immediately.

  3. Fallback to default

When the selected device is disconnected, audio moves to the system default so the game stays audible.

  4. Readable device names

Device names are shown as OpenAL reports them, which may appear garbled for some non-English names.

Use cases

Switching outputs mid-session

A player can route game audio to a headset or back to speakers without restarting the game or touching config files.

Players on older builds

Players who keep 1.7.10 get an output switcher that newer game versions already offer in their sound menus.

Who it’s for: Players on Minecraft 1.7.10 with Forge who use more than one audio output and want to change it from the game. Server owners do not need to install it, since the mod runs on the client alone.

Questions

Does SoundSwitcher need UniMixins?

Yes. UniMixins is a required dependency and must be installed alongside SoundSwitcher on the client.

Does SoundSwitcher have to be on the server?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Which game version does SoundSwitcher support?

Only Minecraft 1.7.10. The single Forge file 1.0.0 is published for that version and no others.

What the author says

SoundSwitcher brings the "Device" button from the Minecraft 21w37a snapshot's or newer version's Music & Sounds menu to older versions of the game. Switch your headphones, speakers, or any other audio output on the fly — no restart required.
