Soul Gravestone
by nouho
When a player dies, Soul Gravestone places a gravestone block at the death location that stores the player's items and experience for later retrieval.
What it does
On death, the mod places a gravestone block where the player fell, and the stored items and a configurable amount of experience are kept inside it. The player respawns as a ghost form, and a recovery compass points back to the gravestone. Edge case handling keeps the gravestone retrievable even when the death happens in an unusual spot.
Behavior can be configured for deaths in lava, water and the void, along with the duration of the ghost form and its Soul Shape effect. The amount of experience stored in each gravestone is also adjustable. Soul Gravestone is open source under the MIT License and is published for NeoForge only, in version 1.21.1, with the latest file 1.0.2 for 1.21.1 released on 2025-11-01. Required both on the server and on the client, so both sides need it.
Key features
Ghost form respawn
After dying, the player returns in a ghost form, with a Soul Shape effect that lasts a configurable length of time.
Gravestone block
The gravestone is placed at the death location and holds the player's items and a set amount of experience.
Recovery compass
A recovery compass is given on respawn so the player can find the gravestone again.
Hazardous death handling
Deaths in lava, water or the void can be configured separately, so gravestones behave as the server owner expects.

Use cases
Surviving a hard death
A player who dies in a dangerous area can recover items from the gravestone instead of losing them to the environment.
Who it’s for: Adventure players and server owners who want deaths to leave a recoverable gravestone rather than a lost inventory.
