Snow Accumulation

by Itamio

Snow Accumulation makes snow layers build up on the ground in cold biomes during snowfall, so a winter world keeps its drifts instead of resetting to a single layer.

FabricForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.12.2 – 1.21.11

What it does

Under snow or rain weather in cold biomes, existing snow layers gain height over time, and the layer count stays within a configurable maximum, with 16 layers as the default. Snow accumulation follows Minecraft's own snow mechanics, so it works with natural snow blocks that generate in the world. Without the mod, a snowfall tends to leave only one layer on each block, which the author notes as the situation this mod changes.

The server sets the rules in its configuration: how far from players accumulation runs (8 chunks by default), how fast it proceeds (one step every 20 ticks, or one second, by default), and how many blocks per chunk and chunks per tick are processed, which can be tuned for performance. Changes can be reloaded in real time, though some settings need a restart or a game settings update.

The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it. Files are published for Fabric and Forge, for 30 release versions 1.12.2 – 1.21.11, and the code is not open source. Both loader builds were last updated in March 2026.

Key features

  1. Layer accumulation

Existing snow layers gain height during snow and rain weather in cold biomes, rather than staying at one layer.

  2. Height limit

The maximum snow height is configurable and enforced with layer counting, with 16 layers as the default.

  3. Chunk radius

Accumulation runs only within a set distance of players, with 8 chunks as the default radius.

  4. Performance tuning

Blocks per chunk and chunks per tick can be adjusted to balance server load against accumulation speed.
