Smooth Motion Blur

by realjahleel

Smooth Motion Blur adds a velocity-based motion blur effect for Fabric on the client, where each pixel smears along the path of camera movement.

What it does

Rather than blurring the whole screen evenly, the mod works out the direction of camera movement from per-pixel depth and the camera position of the previous frame, so only pixels that move smear along their own path. Fast flicks produce clean directional streaks, and the view snaps back to a crisp image once the camera stops.

The first-person hand, the HUD, menus and the center of the screen stay sharp. Strength is set with the command motionblur followed by a value from 0 to 300: 1 to 100 gives a natural range that matches real camera motion, and 101 to 300 gives overdrive streaks for cinematic footage. Hotkeys adjust strength in 5 percent steps and can be rebound, and the sample count grows as streaks get longer, so long smears stay smooth without spending frames on small motions.

The mod is published for Fabric only, for 1.21.11, and it is client-side only, so servers run without it. It is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, with source code available, and the author notes it is meant to sit alongside other rendering mods.

Key features

  1. Velocity-based blur

Each pixel is reprojected from the previous frame, so smears follow the actual direction of camera motion.

  2. Sharp focal areas

The first-person hand, HUD, menus and the screen center are kept crisp while the rest of the view blurs.

  3. Adjustable strength

The motionblur command takes values from 0 to 300, and hotkeys change strength in 5 percent steps.

  4. Adaptive sampling

Sample count scales with streak length, keeping long streaks smooth while small motions cost little performance.

  5. Instant response

Blur reacts within a single frame and avoids the accumulation ghosting that older blur effects leave behind.

What the author says

Velocity-based motion blur that makes your gameplay look buttery smooth. This mod recreates the way fast motion looks to the human eye: instead of uniformly blurring the whole screen, it reconstructs the direction of camera movement for every pixel and smears only along that path.
