Server Redirect

by KaiKikuchi

Server Redirect lets server administrators send connected players to another server address, without running a proxy server in between.

FabricForgeClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.7.10 – 1.21

What it does

Commands are the entry point. A redirect command moves a chosen group of players to a given address, and a fallback command sets the address players are sent to when they are forcefully disconnected. Commands can come from a command block, a console or any other source able to run a command, and they are meant for automation rather than for players to type. Recommended setups pair the commands with command aliases or a server selector menu from other plugins.

The mod is optional: players without it can still join, and clients with it can join servers that lack it. Only the client needs the mod to receive a transfer; a player without it stays on the current server. Any address reachable through the Direct Connect button can be used. Pairing the mod with Waterfall on Forge requires the Forge server to be online, because IP forwarding has not been added there yet.

Server Redirect is published for Fabric and Forge, and for Spigot, Bukkit, Sponge, Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall as server platforms. Builds cover 1.16.1 – 1.21.1, and Fabric and Forge files exist for 27 release versions. The code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Redirect command

Sends a selected group of players to a given server address, for example players named in the command or all players of a server.

  2. Fallback command

Sets an address that players are sent to when they get forcefully disconnected, so a shutdown still moves them somewhere.

  3. Player selection

Targets can be a named player or UUID, a target selector, a radius around the command sender, or a server name on proxies.

  4. Proxy-free transfers

Players move between servers through a transfer packet instead of a proxy, which avoids mod incompatibility issues that proxies can cause.

Use cases

Automatic fallback

Server owners run the fallback command for every player who joins, so players reach a backup server if the main one goes down.

Lobby routing

Command blocks or other plugins can send players from a hub to a game server through a server selector GUI.

Who it’s for: Server owners and administrators who want to move players between servers without a proxy, and modpack authors who want an optional client-side component that does not block players from joining.

Questions

Does Server Redirect need to be installed on both sides?

No. It works on either side, and neither needs it, so installing it on one side is enough and players without the mod can still join.

Why might a redirect not work right after a player joins?

The commands rely on a packet the client sends to tell the server the mod is installed. Delay the command for at least 20 ticks once the player has connected.

Which loaders and server platforms does the mod support?

Fabric and Forge are the loaders. Spigot, Bukkit, Sponge, Velocity, BungeeCord and Waterfall are supported as server platforms.
