Selfskin

by Wonder

Selfskin lets a player change their own skin on the client, by placing image files in a folder inside the .minecraft directory.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyCustom license1.15.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

Selfskin reads image files from the .minecraft/selfskins folder and applies them as the player's skin. A file placed directly in that folder uses the classic model, and a file in the slim subfolder uses the slim model. The skin overrides the one the player already has, and it also works for offline players.

Skins update automatically when the player enters a world. Running the selfskin:reload command in a world refreshes skins, and the command accepts a single username so only that player's skin is reloaded. Changes made this way stay visible only to the player who made them, so other players keep seeing the skins they had. The mod is client-side only, so only the client needs it and servers run without it. It is released under a custom license that is not open source, and it requires Fabric or Quilt on Minecraft 1.15.2 – 1.20.1, with Forge support not yet available.

Key features

  1. Classic and slim skin files

Place an image in the selfskins folder for the classic model or in the slim subfolder for the slim model.

  2. Automatic skin refresh

Skins update when the player enters a world, without a restart or a separate step.

  3. Targeted reload command

The reload command takes a username, so a single player's skin can be refreshed on its own.

Use cases

Testing skin files

A skin author can swap a file in the folder and reload it in a world to check how it looks.

Local skin changes

A player can use a custom skin in single-player or on a server without changing what other players see.

Who it’s for: Players who want a custom skin on their own client, and skin makers who want to test files in game without a resource pack.

Questions

Does Selfskin need to be installed on the server?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Which loaders does Selfskin support?

Selfskin is published for Fabric and Quilt. Forge support is not yet available.

Why does a reload not change other players' skins?

Changes made with the reload command are applied only on the local client, so other players continue to see the skins they already have.

Is Selfskin compatible with Ears?

The author says the mod is compatible with Ears, but the author notes list known incompatible mods as well, so check before combining them.
