Screaming Goats

by znopp

Screaming Goats is a Fabric mod that changes goat textures so that goats with the screaming trait look different from regular goats.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.19 – 1.21.7

What it does

The mod separates screaming goats from non-screaming goats by giving the screaming variant its own texture. Players who run it on the client see the altered goats in the world, and nothing about how the goats behave is changed. The mod is client-side only, so the server and other players do not need it.

The texture is supplied as an edit point rather than a finished pack: the author describes taking a barebones resourcepack, extracting the zip, and replacing the goat texture files inside the assets folder while keeping the file names the same. The result is re-zipped and applied as a resourcepack. Installation is a single jar placed in the mods folder for Fabric, and the author notes that the mod works with Forge as well.

The project is published for 1.19 – 1.21.7 across eleven release versions, with the latest Fabric file, 1.6-1.21.7, built for 1.21.7. The code is released under the MIT License and is open source, and the source code and issue tracker are linked publicly.

Key features

  1. Distinct screaming goats

Goats with the screaming trait receive a separate texture, so they can be told apart from regular goats at a glance.

  2. Cursed texture swap

The mod ships a deliberately unusual goat texture for the screaming variant, which can be left as is or replaced.

  3. Editable texture files

The goat texture lives in the assets folder of a resourcepack, so a player can swap in a different image by keeping the same file name.

  4. Step-by-step texture guide

The author text walks through taking the barebones resourcepack, extracting it, editing the file and re-zipping it.

Use cases

Cursed visual pranks

Players who want an odd appearance for screaming goats on a single-player world or a private client can set one up with the texture swap.

Custom goat art

Because the texture is meant to be replaced, a player can use their own image for the screaming goats.

Who it’s for: Players who want to change how screaming goats look on their own client and are comfortable editing a resourcepack by hand. Servers do not need the mod, since it runs on the client alone.

Questions

Does Screaming Goats need to be installed on the server?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which loader does Screaming Goats use?

The mod is published for Fabric. The author notes that it works with Forge as well, though Fabric is the loader with a file for 1.21.7.

How is the goat texture changed?

Take the barebones resourcepack, extract the zip, open the assets folder, replace the goat texture with a file of the same name, then re-zip the pack and apply it in the game.
