Render Distance Toggle

by JulzLosB

Render Distance Toggle switches the render distance down and back up whenever a player turns shaders on or off through Iris, so the setting follows the shader state.

What it does

Render Distance Toggle is a Fabric mod for players who switch shaders often. When shaders are on, it lowers the render distance to a value that keeps frame rates steady, and when they are turned off it raises the distance again to the value the player chose. The mod syncs these changes with Iris shader toggles, so no manual adjustment is needed while building, exploring or taking screenshots.

The preferred low and high distances are set in the in-game configuration reached through Mod Menu, and the delay before each switch can be adjusted from 2 to 10 ticks to avoid conflicts with other mods. Bobby is required, since it reads the maximum render distance that the mod works with, and Iris and Mod Menu are optional, with Cloth Config for the configuration screen. The mod is client-side only and the license is MIT License; the source code is open source, and the issue tracker is public.

Files cover 1.21.8, 1.21.9, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11, and the latest Fabric file is 1.0.2 for 1.21.11, published 2025-12-20. The first release came out on 2025-11-23.

Key features

  1. Automatic render distance switching

Shaders being turned on lower the render distance, and turning them off raises it again, without a manual change.

  2. Preferred low and high distances

The low and high values are set separately through the Mod Menu configuration screen.

  3. Adjustable switch delay

The delay before each switch is configurable from 2 to 10 ticks to help avoid conflicts with other mods.

  4. Iris shader integration

Shader toggles from Iris trigger the switch, and vanilla rendering keeps the same render distance it had before.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits players who use Iris shaders together with Bobby and want the render distance to follow the shader state. Players who never change shaders will not gain anything from it.

What the author says

Automatically adjusts render distance when toggling shaders on/off for optimal performance. I personally switch often between on/off and play with huge render distances thanks to Bobby and Nvidium. The performance with shaders on and a render distance of 192 was having a huge impact of FPS. Perfect for players who…
