Quilt Bisect

by anonymous123-code

Quilt Bisect is a Quilt tool for narrowing down which installed mod is causing a crash or other fault by running binary searches over the mod set.

What it does

Quilt Bisect works as a Quilt loader plugin that finds the mods responsible for a problem, using a search method based on binary search. It can also handle n-way mod incompatibilities, and the game restarts automatically between test runs so the user does not have to relaunch by hand. Each bisect step is logged, and the active state, including the settings tried, is kept in a file at quilt bisect/active bisect.json.

Because it ignores dependency ordering and only force-loads the mods in the mods folder, the required mods of the candidate set are still loaded, while optional mods load only when another mod requires them. Once a bisect identifies a minimal reproduction set, that set contains only the mods the culprit depends on, which means the mod set must still reproduce the fault before any mod is blamed. The author recommends testing with Quilt Crasher, which was written for that purpose, and treating the tool with care because of how bisecting works.

Key features

  1. Automatic bisecting

The tool splits the mod set in halves and restarts the game between runs until the problematic mods are isolated.

  2. Multiple issues in turn

Users are advised to isolate one issue per bisect, verify its fix, and then bisect the next issue, with earlier fixes applied.

  3. Summary report

When a bisect finishes, the tool gives a summary of the issues and solutions it encountered.

  4. Reproduction before bisecting

The advice is to try to reproduce the issue before starting, since a bisect is only meaningful when the fault reliably appears.

Use cases

Finding a crash culprit

A player with a crash on load can use a bisect to reduce a long mod list to the few mods that trigger it.

Who it’s for: Modpack authors and players who troubleshoot a large Quilt mod set and want a repeatable way to locate the mod responsible for a fault.
