Proper Ping

by unixkitty

Proper Ping replaces the vanilla latency readout with a custom measurement and a customizable HUD element for the player's own ping.

ForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.19.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

The vanilla ping figure is calculated in a way the author found inaccurate, so the mod sends its own packet and averages the last five round-trip-time results. The displayed value is not the one the game reports by default. The HUD element can be placed on the right side of the screen or anywhere else, shows the last five measurements as numbers, and can be hidden completely.

Other players' latency can be shown as plain numbers in the player list instead of abstract bars, and a server-side config option controls this. The server decides how often latency values are broadcast to everyone, and clients receive a latency value only once every 30 seconds. The example config and a full display with the last five measurements are shown on the mod page.

Proper Ping is published for Forge, for 1.19.2 and 1.20.1, and the 1.0.0 file for 1.20.1 was released on 2024-03-09. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod. The author notes that a Fabric version is expected for newer Minecraft releases. The code is not open source, and all rights are reserved.

Key features

  1. Custom latency measurement

The mod sends its own packet to measure round-trip time and averages the last five results for the displayed value.

  2. Customizable HUD element

The ping display can be positioned anywhere on the screen, including the right side, or hidden completely.

  3. Last five measurements

The HUD element can show the last five latency readings in the same element as the average.

  4. Numeric player list values

Other players' latency appears as numbers in the player list, controlled by a server-side config option.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who find the vanilla ping figure unreliable, and server owners who want to control how latency values are shared in the player list.

How it compares

Full comparison

LatencyLite is Forge-only for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6, client-side only and not open source. TabListExtension is Forge for 1.19.2 – 1.20.1, client and server, and open source under the MIT License, so it covers the same game versions and needs both sides. Easy Hud is Forge for 1.20.1 only, client-side only and not open source under the MIT License.

Fabric and newer Minecraft versions coming soon. Vanilla ping/latency calculation always seemed incredibly inaccurate and delayed to me. Info
