Portable Crates
by Kamorzy
Portable Crates lets players carry a block of 9 slots that behaves much like an early-game shulker box, with a sealed one-way version that keeps its contents.
What it does
Portable Crates adds two crate blocks, a regular crate and a sealed crate, each with a 9-slot inventory that works like a container when placed. Breaking a crate drops it as an item with its contents, and the crate stacks to 64 while a sealed crate does not. Crates cannot be stored inside shulker boxes, and shulker boxes cannot be stored in crates.
The mod is tuned to keep the vanilla experience intact: crates hold less than a shulker box and can be used once, so they fit the early and mid game and leave bulk storage to later. Comparators read crate fullness like any other container, and hoppers and droppers work as expected with regular crates. Sealed crates cannot be opened by players outside creative mode, and droppers and hoppers do not interact with them. Dispensers can place crate blocks, and pistons that move a crate break it and drop what it holds. The mod requires Fabric API, runs on Fabric or Quilt, and is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later, so it is open source.
Key features
Two crate types
A regular crate and a sealed crate, each holding 9 slots of items.
Items keep their contents
Breaking a filled crate drops it as an item with its items inside, and an empty one drops as a plain crate.
Sealed crate access
Sealed crates cannot be opened by players except in creative mode, which makes them a storage option for the late game.
Automation support
Comparators read crate fullness, and hoppers and droppers work with regular crates as they do with other containers.

What the author says
Portable Crates are like early-game shulker boxes. To balance and fit with vanilla, they are only one-time-use and lower capacity. That said, they have a variety of uses from early game to end game - notably alleviating the early game inventory management issues. Both are containers with 9 slots of inventory space…
