PhLib
by poolcritter
PhLib is a library for Hex Casting addon developers, exposing helper functions for building new patterns and iota types.
What it does
PhLib provides utility functions that Hex Casting addons can call instead of writing their own. It includes helpers for registering patterns, for creating common action types such as constant actions and literals, and for propagating mishaps that some casting environments would otherwise re-throw. Lani's gambits are also included among its contents. Hex Casting is required, and it is the only mod PhLib depends on.
Addon authors can build on PhLib in Scala or Java, and it also contains miscellaneous utility functions shared between projects. A command for adding iotas with arbitrary data is restricted to level 2 operators, so server owners control who can use it. PhLib runs on Fabric and is server-side only, so the server alone needs it and players join without installing anything. Files target 1.20.1 only, and the latest Fabric build is 0.1.4, released on 2026-08-08.
PhLib is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. Two other catalog mods require it, Hexic and Iotaworks, which use it to convert and handle map iotas. Players install PhLib only as a dependency of those mods or of a Hex Casting addon, not on their own.
Key features
Pattern registration
Patterns.register lets an addon add its own patterns to Hex Casting without changing the base mod.
Action constructors
Patterns.mkAction, Patterns.mkConstAction and Patterns.mkLiteral build common action types in one call.
Mishap propagation
propagateMishaps catches mishaps that some casting environments would re-throw, so the game does not crash.
Level 2 iota command
The gimmeiota command adds an iota with arbitrary data and is limited to level 2 operators.

Use cases
Hex Casting addon development
Addon authors use the registration and constructor helpers to add patterns and action types without rewriting shared code.
Map iota conversion
Hexic and Iotaworks use PhLib to convert and handle map iotas created by Hex Casting addons.
Who it’s for: PhLib is aimed at developers writing Scala or Java addons for Hex Casting, and at server owners running mods that depend on it.
