Perlinescent Caves

by lunaStellarii

Perlinescent Caves is a world generation data pack that reshapes underground caves in Minecraft 1.21, adding large cave lakes, rivers and aquifers.

FabricForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.01.21

What it does

Perlinescent Caves changes how caves generate underground, aiming to stay close to the vanilla underground experience while adding large cave lakes and wider cave types. Cheese caves are much wider and taller, often with a smooth look, while pancake caves come in many sizes and only rarely grow massive. Spaghetti caves are wider than vanilla spaghetti caves and sit at a slow elevation change, and udon caves line up with aquifer generation to form cave rivers. Larger caves sometimes contain large aquifers, which makes boating possible, and underwater magma is redistributed to help exploration of open flooded spaces.

Most major vanilla caves keep their locations and shapes, and the mod overlaps them with cave lakes or extra intersecting caves. Some aspects add kelp, extra mineshaft loot and noodle-like passages to help traversal. The pack is distributed as a data pack for Fabric, Forge and Quilt, and it is server required with client optional. Files target 1.21 only, and the code is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license, so it is not open source.

Key features

  1. Large cave lakes

Cave lakes and rivers generate inside caves, with large aquifers that spread across wide areas.

  2. Cave type variety

Cheese, pancake, spaghetti and udon caves each get a distinct shape and size range.

  3. Underwater exploration

Magma is redistributed underwater, and open flooded spaces are easier to explore.

  4. Vanilla-respecting caves

Most major vanilla cave locations and shapes are kept, with additional caves overlapping them.

Questions

Does Perlinescent Caves need a specific loader?

Files exist for Fabric, Forge and Quilt, all for 1.21. Choose the loader that matches the server.

Does the client need Perlinescent Caves installed?

No. The server must run it, while players may leave it out.

Can Perlinescent Caves be used in a world that already exists?

Newly generated chunks use the new cave shapes, so existing terrain is not rewritten by the pack.
