npc2

by oofman124

npc2 is an experimental Fabric mod that drops autonomous survival NPCs into a world, letting players spawn and observe them from the Creative inventory.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source26.2 – 26.3

What it does

Each NPC runs a weighted survival plan and keeps persistent memories of what it has done. Choices are made by a node-based behavior graph that covers gathering, crafting, combat, storage and movement, while the NPCs rely on vanilla mob physics. Installed on a client and a server, the mod can be used in singleplayer worlds, LAN games and multiplayer servers.

To spawn one, go to the Spawn Eggs tab in the vanilla Creative inventory and place the Survivor NPC Spawn Egg on flat ground that is open to the sky. Players with permission can also spawn one with a command. Entering a world shows a formatted quick-start message in chat that contains the spawn command and the debug controls, along with a link to the issue tracker. The NPCs move slowly across floating water.

Fabric API and Fabric Language Kotlin are both required, and their dependencies must be installed on the server and on every player's client. Files exist for 26.2 and 26.3, with 0.3.1-alpha+26.3 the latest file for 26.3, released under the MIT License. The source code is public, and the mod is open source.

Key features

  1. Weighted survival planning

A weighted plan chooses what each NPC does next, and the NPC keeps persistent memories between decisions.

  2. Node-based behavior graph

Decisions are made through a graph of behavior nodes covering gathering, crafting, combat, storage and movement.

  3. Debug panel

Pressing X pins the selected NPC and expands a panel; pressing X again unpins it. F8 toggles debugging, including the panel, a glowing outline and path visualization.

  4. Expanded NPC information

The expanded panel shows an NPC's current decisions, movement path, state, resource requirements and equipment, while the inventory holds other AI information.
