Now Playing

by Scotsguy

With Now Playing, a popup appears on screen each time the background music or a jukebox track changes, naming the song that just started.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.19 – 26.3

What it does

Whenever the active music track changes, the mod shows a toast in the top right corner of the screen or a message just above the hotbar, and the position can be set in the configuration. The popup gives the title of the song the player is about to hear, which spares players from listening to every track to learn its name. Background music and jukebox music each have their own display style, so the two can be shown differently.

The mod is a client-side utility with no effect on the server side. Its published files cover 1.19 – 26.3 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with snapshot builds published as well. Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu are required dependencies, and the source code and issue tracker are public. The code is under the MIT License, so the project is open source.

Key features

  1. Toast or hotbar display

Each music type can show its popup as a toast or as a hotbar status message, chosen separately for background and jukebox music.

  2. Silent toast option

A setting can suppress the toast for music set to the hotbar when a hotbar message cannot be shown, keeping the screen clear.

  3. Fallback to toast

When a hotbar message is not possible, the popup can fall back to a toast instead of disappearing.

  4. Keybinding or command

The popup can be triggered through a key or a command, so players can check the current track on demand.

  5. Resource pack disc sprites

A resource pack can assign a disc sprite to each background music track, matched by full or partial resource location.

  6. Translated track titles

Resource packs can supply track titles through translation files, so custom background music shows a readable name.

Use cases

Learning soundtrack names

Players who want to know what a track is called can read the title on screen as it starts, without searching a soundtrack list.

Custom music packs

Resource pack authors can attach their own titles and disc sprites to custom background music, so the popup matches the pack.

Who it’s for: Players who listen to the game's music and want to see track titles, and resource pack authors who add background music and want it to display with a readable name.

Questions

Does Now Playing need Fabric API to run on Fabric?

Yes. Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu are required dependencies, so all three must be installed alongside Now Playing on Fabric.

Does the server need Now Playing installed?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

How are custom track titles added?

A resource pack places a translation file in a nowplaying folder under its assets directory, with keys prefixed by nowplaying. Older music.nowplaying entries still work with lower priority.

What the author says

Shows a popup whenever the active music track changes. Have you ever wondered what all the songs in Minecraft are actually called? Sure, you could check the soundtrack to find out, but then you have to listen to every song, hoping it's the one you're thinking of.
