No Fire Overlay (Mod)

by b-null

No Fire Overlay is a Fabric client mod that removes the full-screen fire overlay while the player is burning, and offers a smaller fire icon by the crosshair instead.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.8

What it does

Vanilla draws a large orange overlay over the whole screen whenever the player stands in fire. No Fire Overlay can take that overlay away. Its settings file lets the player pick one of two modes. In hide mode the overlay is removed completely, and in shrink mode the overlay is reduced in size a lot, and a small fire icon appears next to the crosshair to show that the player is on fire. The mod's behavior is set in a JSON file located under the config folder of the .minecraft directory, called no-fire-overlay.json. Its scale value for the fire icon accepts numbers 0.5 – 3.0, and anything lower or higher is ignored.

The mod is open source under the MIT License, is published for Fabric, and covers 1.20.1 – 1.21.8. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing. Fabric API is not listed as a requirement in the mod's data, so the mod can be installed alone on a Fabric client.

Key features

  1. Overlay removal

The full-screen fire overlay is removed, so the view stays clear while the player is burning.

  2. Hide and shrink modes

A hide mode removes the overlay entirely, and a shrink mode keeps a reduced version of it.

  3. Small fire icon

In shrink mode a small fire icon appears next to the crosshair to show that the player is on fire.

  4. Icon scaling

The fire icon can be scaled 0.5 – 3.0 in the config file, and the icon can be disabled entirely.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who use the Fabric loader on the game versions 1.20.1 – 1.21.8 and want to change how burning is shown on screen. Servers need nothing, because the environment is client-side only.

How it compares

Full comparison

Fire Overlay Controller is also a client-side Fabric mod that controls the fire overlay, and it is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, with files for 1.16.5 – 1.21.5. Third Person Crosshair is client-side only as well, is open source under the MIT License, and is published for 1.20.6 – 1.21, so it changes the crosshair rather than the fire display.

Questions

Does No Fire Overlay need Fabric API?

The mod's data lists no required dependencies, and it is published for Fabric only, so no separate library is named as a requirement.

Does the server need No Fire Overlay?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Where are the settings stored?

The settings are in no-fire-overlay.json, located under the config folder of the .minecraft directory. The mode, the icon scale and the on or off switch are changed there.

What the author says

This is a very simple mod that removes the fire overlay from your screen when you're on fire. There are two 'modes' in this mod: hide and shrink. Hide: This will completely remove vanilla's overlay (This does not affect fire blocks) and will render a small fire icon next to your crosshair to let you know you're on…
