Nether Start Challenge
by FunkyToc
Nether Start Challenge drops new players into the Nether and asks them to find their way back to the Overworld, with only a few starting items.
What it does
A new player begins the adventure in the Nether instead of the Overworld. The starting kit is limited to a respawn anchor and four glowstone, along with a quick fire resistance effect. Travel to the Overworld stays closed until the player builds a portal of their own.
When a run ends, the player respawns with the same minimal kit, and the spawn point moves to a new random location in the Nether. The stated goal is to find the way out to the Overworld and then play the classic vanilla survival game from there. Vanilla Nether content provides everything needed to survive the challenge, so the mod adds no extra items of its own.
The mod is packaged as a data pack, so it installs through a world's datapack folder and works on servers. Only the server needs it installed; players joining without it can still play. It is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial No Derivatives 4.0 license and is not open source.
Key features
Nether start
Every new player begins in the Nether rather than in the Overworld, and new players are always dropped there.
Minimal starting kit
The kit holds a respawn anchor and four glowstone, with a quick fire resistance effect to help the first minutes.
Random respawn after a run
When a run ends, the player respawns in a new random Nether location with the same kit.
Portal lock
Passage back to the Overworld is gated behind a portal the player must construct using their own materials.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Players who want a survival challenge built on vanilla Nether content, and server owners who host such runs for groups.
How it compares
Nether Portal Spread is server-side only, uses All rights reserved, and covers 1.16.5 – 26.3 across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, so it changes portal behavior rather than starting players in the Nether. Random Respawn needs the server but accepts optional clients, is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0, and covers 1.18 – 1.21 on Fabric, Forge and Quilt, without the Nether start. Nether Start/Wither Challenge is for 1.21.4 only, under the MIT License, and is also server-required with optional clients.
