MusicLayer

by Zeith

With MusicLayer installed, a Forge modpack can play background music from Ogg files in layers, chosen by other mods that call it.

What it does

MusicLayer is a Library mod for Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge. It lets other mods choose and manipulate music layers, and it plays Ogg files without the game freezing while a track loads. A sound is referenced by a resource location, so a call such as testmod:music/beach plays the assets/testmod/sounds/music/beach.ogg file. Mods that need a different sound can supply an input stream directly.

The mod itself does not change gameplay; it only plays music for other mods that use it. Only a single mod needs to use it, so a modpack can be built around one integration point. HammerLib is required and must be installed alongside MusicLayer. Several default Ogg files can be layered together, and add-ons are allowed. The mod is client-side only, so servers do not need it. It is released under All rights reserved, and it is not open source, though public links to the source code and issue tracker exist.

Key features

  1. Layered music playback

Several Ogg files can be combined into layers, so a mod can change the music by adding or removing layers.

  2. Resource location lookup

Tracks are named by resource location, so a mod asks for testmod:music/beach and the matching Ogg file plays.

  3. Input stream playback

A mod can pass its own input stream, so a sound that is not stored as an asset can still be played.

  4. Non-blocking loading

Ogg files are read in a way that keeps the game from freezing while a track starts.

WARNING: This mod by itself doesn't affect your gameplay, but can play music when other mods are using it. There is no single point in using it unless it's required by another mod. From resource location (ex: We use testmod:music/beach and it plays /assets/testmod/sounds/music/beach.ogg file)
