M-Tape

by retrixe

M-Tape is a Fabric and Quilt utility that measures distances between blocks in the game world, set from an origin point the player chooses.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.16 – 1.21.4

What it does

Players enable M-Tape with a key press, then sneak and click the Set Origin button while looking at a block to start measuring. The mod highlights the block under the crosshair so the player can see which block will be used. Distances are then read from that origin to any block the player points at, which suits building projects that need exact spacing.

Selecting blocks is a second function. With M-Tape enabled, the Select Block option or the G key marks the block being looked at, and selected blocks are outlined in orange. Selections stay in place after M-Tape is disabled, and sneaking and clicking Select Block clears them all.

M-Tape is client-side only, so only the player's client needs it and a server does not need to run it. Files are released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and the source code is open. The mod requires Fabric API, which must be installed alongside it. Builds cover 1.16 – 1.21.4 for Fabric and Quilt, and the latest file, 1.7.4+1.21.3, is for 1.21.4 and dates from 2024-11-28.

Key features

  1. Distance measuring

An origin is set on a chosen block, and distances are read from it to other blocks in the world.

  2. Block highlighting

The block under the crosshair is highlighted before a measurement or selection starts.

  3. Block selection

Blocks can be selected with the G key or the Select Block option, and selections are kept for later reference.

  4. Orange outlines

Selected blocks are outlined in orange and stay visible after M-Tape is turned off.

  5. Quick clearing

Sneaking and clicking Select Block removes all selected blocks at once.

Questions

Does M-Tape need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is a required dependency and must be installed next to M-Tape on Fabric or Quilt.

Does the server need M-Tape installed?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which game versions does M-Tape support?

Files cover 1.16 – 1.21.4 across 28 release versions on Fabric and Quilt, and the latest file is for 1.21.4.
