Misanthrope Gas Engine

by kitkatcae

Misanthrope Gas Engine replaces the air in Minecraft worlds with a simulated atmosphere made of several gases, and the mob-breathing rules depend on what each block contains.

ForgeClient and serverCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.01.20.1 – 1.20.6

What it does

Each block of air is swapped for a block called mge:atmosphere, which stores its gas mix in NBT data. Gases spread to the 26 neighboring positions, gain or lose weight with temperature, and drift up or down along air currents. Pressure thins with altitude, so higher places hold a sparser atmosphere, and each dimension sets its own default gases.

Whether a player or other entity can breathe depends on the gas in the atmosphere block they occupy, and the mod also reworks breathing for mobs that do not live in water. The engine is a Forge mod for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6, released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial 4.0 license, which is not open source; its source code is public. It needs Cold Sweat, Pehkui, Photon Editor and Thermodynamica, and Beyond Oxygen is optional.

Key features

  1. Gas simulation

Gas pressure and weight are tracked per block, so the mix in one area can differ from its neighbors.

  2. Thinning atmosphere

The air becomes thinner at higher altitudes, which changes how far a player can go before running short of breath.

  3. Air currents

Warm gas rises and cool gas sinks, moving the atmosphere through the world over time.

  4. Breathing for mobs

Breathing is also applied to non-aquatic mobs, not only to players.

Use cases

Survival with a harsh sky

Players who want air to matter in a survival world can use the gas rules to make high places and sealed areas dangerous.

Who it’s for: Players who want the air itself to be part of a survival or adventure world, and server owners who accept a shared simulated atmosphere. Because it is client and server, the server and every player need the mod, and the mod has to run alongside its required dependencies.

Questions

Does Misanthrope Gas Engine need Cold Sweat?

Yes. Cold Sweat is a required dependency, along with Pehkui, Photon Editor and Thermodynamica.

Does the server need the mod?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Which game versions does the mod support?

Files exist for 1.20.1, 1.20.2, 1.20.3, 1.20.4, 1.20.5 and 1.20.6, with 2.7.7 for 1.20.6 as the latest Forge file.

Does the mod work with other dimension mods?

The mod is built to keep its gas rules inside each dimension's data, so dimensions added by other mods can define their own default gases.
