messed up settings

by dsinkerii

messed up settings is a client-side Fabric mod that lets a player change the game's options beyond their normal limits, after a password is entered in the main menu.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20 – 1.21.6

What it does

Once the mod is running, the player can edit the game settings that the standard options screen restricts, and the password set through the mod controls who can open that editing. A password is entered in the main menu, and it can be changed or removed later. Friends who share a world or server can use the same editing access only if they are given the password.

The mod needs Pehkui as a required dependency, and Pehkui has to be installed alongside it for the mod to start. LibJF and Slyde are optional dependencies that extend the settings the mod can reach. Only the client needs the mod, so servers run without it. Installation steps for the executable and the .NET runtime are covered in the author's text, and the author notes that a non-default launcher is a workable alternative to the default one.

The mod is released under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code and issue tracker publicly available. Files exist for 14 release versions 1.20 – 1.21.6, and the latest Fabric file is 1.5-1.21.1 for 1.21, published on 2026-01-16. It was first published on 2025-06-13.

Key features

  1. Expanded settings access

Options that the standard settings screen limits can be edited once the mod is running and Pehkui is present.

  2. Password protection

A password set in the main menu gates access to the settings editor, and it can be changed or cleared when needed.

  3. Optional extensions

LibJF and Slyde can be added to widen the set of settings the mod can change.

  4. Password reset on reboot

Changing the password takes effect after the game is restarted, and a leaked password is cleared by a restart.

Questions

Does messed up settings need Pehkui?

Yes. Pehkui is a required dependency, and the mod will not run without it. LibJF and Slyde are optional and can be added to extend the settings.

Does the server need the mod?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

Which launcher should be used?

The author notes that a launcher other than the default one works well, and the default launcher also works.

What happens if the password leaks?

The author notes that a restart resets the password, so changing it after a leak is done by reboot.
