Maintenance Mode
by hypherionsa
With Maintenance Mode, a server owner can close the server to everyone except chosen players while updates, config changes or mod tests are underway.
What it does
Maintenance Mode places a server into a maintenance state in which only the players on an allowed list can join, and everyone else is disconnected. Owners can schedule a start and an end time, set a custom server icon and message of the day for the maintenance period, and write a customizable kick message. MOTD and kick messages accept MiniMessage and Minecraft formatting codes, and LuckPerms is supported for permission checks.
The mod is aimed at server owners who need to change configuration, test new mods or add features without players joining in the middle of the work. It can take the place of de-whitelisting everyone and whitelisting again. A full server backup can also be made from the same mod, covering configs, mods and settings. CraterLib must be installed on the server, as it is the required dependency.
The server is the only side that needs the mod, so players join without installing anything. It is open source under the MIT License and published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with builds covering 1.12.2 – 26.3. The latest file is 1.3.4 for 26.3, released on 2026-05-20.
Key features
Allowed-player access
During maintenance only the players on the allowed list can connect, while all other players are disconnected.
Scheduled maintenance
A start time and an end time can be set, so the maintenance window opens and closes without manual steps.
Custom icon and message
A separate server icon and message of the day are shown while maintenance mode is active, with MiniMessage and Minecraft formatting.
Full server backup
The mod can create a backup of the server, including configs, mods and settings, before changes are made.

How it compares
Fabric Tab List is a server-side only mod, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, for 1.16.5 – 1.21 on Fabric, so it changes the player list rather than access. Backup Manager covers Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.18.2 – 1.21.5 with a client and server environment, and is not open source under the BSD-4-Clause license, so players must also run it. Simple Backups is open source under the Apache License 2.0 and runs on Forge and NeoForge for 1.18.1 – 26.3, with client or server optional.
