Longview

by Ennui

Players who see flickering, jaggies or Z-fighting on distant terrain can install Longview, which corrects depth precision for far distances.

What it does

Longview changes how the depth buffer is set up in the renderer. It uses the GL ARB CLIP CONTROL extension, part of OpenGL 4.5, to shift the clip range to [0,1], and it applies the reversed Z technique, which swaps the far and near planes. Together these spread depth precision evenly across the view, so distant surfaces stop flickering and stepping.

Where the hardware offers neither the extension nor OpenGL 4.5, such as on macOS, only the reversed Z step applies, and it has no effect on the limits because they stay symmetric. Longview is compatible with shader packs that support it; otherwise it disables itself temporarily, which the F3 debug screen shows. It also works with custom graphics backends, which must implement the first technique themselves. Builds are published for Fabric and NeoForge.

Key features

  1. Depth buffer correction

Spreads depth precision evenly across the view, reducing Z-fighting on distant terrain and objects.

  2. Reversed Z rendering

Swaps the far and near planes in the renderer so depth values are distributed more evenly over distance.

  3. Clip control path

Uses the GL ARB CLIP CONTROL extension to change the Z coordinate range, when the graphics device supports it.

  4. Shader pack handling

Works with supported shader packs and turns itself off temporarily for packs without support.

Use cases

Long-distance views

Players who render far with a large view distance see fewer flickering surfaces and jagged edges at range.

Who it’s for: Players who use high render distances on Minecraft 26.1 with Fabric or NeoForge, and players who run shader packs that support Longview.

Questions

Does Longview need to be installed on the server?

No. Players add it to their own game, and a server needs no copy.

Which Minecraft versions does Longview support?

Files exist for 26.1, 26.1.1 and 26.1.2. The mod will continue to work in 26.1, but the game already includes the same fixes in later releases, so it is no longer needed there.

Why does Longview disable itself with some shader packs?

Shader packs that do not support Longview cause it to turn off temporarily, and the F3 debug information shows this state.

Longview is one of 36,990 Utility mods on ModsFinder, and one of 25,772 Utility mods for Fabric. 15,189 mods support Minecraft 26.1.2.

What the author says

Longview is a mod for Minecraft 26.1 that fixes glitches such as Z-fighting and jaggies on far distances. This is accomplished through two techniques: 1) By changing the Z coordinate limits from [-1,1] to [0,1] using the GL_ARB_CLIP_CONTROL extension (officially part of OpenGL 4.5) 2) By applying the reversed Z…
