Lifesteal

by faker

With Lifesteal, a player who kills another player takes one heart from the victim, and hearts can also be bottled and traded between players.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT License1.19 – 26.1.2

What it does

Hearts move between players on death: the killer gains one heart, the victim loses one, and the change takes effect at once. A player can have at most 20 hearts, and a player who reaches 0 hearts goes into spectator mode, with the death announced to the server. Deaths from environmental causes also count, so a fall or lava death costs a heart as well.

A heart can be turned into a bottled heart that is stored, traded and destroyed like any other item. Heart bottles are crafted from a thick potion, redstone dust and glowstone dust. Drinking an empty heart bottle does not give a heart, and drinking a bottled heart transfers one heart to the drinker, but it applies weakness, which discourages abusing the item in battle. Nine new advancements added with the mod are placed in the adventure tab.

Lifesteal is a server mod: the server needs it, and players may add it. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 27 release versions, 1.19 – 26.1.2, and is released under the MIT License, though the code is not open source. Admin commands give empty heart bottles and bottled hearts. Its files are not built to be combined with the data pack listed beside it.

Key features

  1. Heart transfer on death

A kill moves one heart from the victim to the killer, so the change is immediate and visible to both players.

  2. Bottled hearts

Hearts can be stored in bottles that players trade or keep, and a bottle can be destroyed like any normal item.

  3. Weakness on drinking

Drinking a bottled heart applies the weakness effect, which limits using the item as a quick heal in combat.

  4. Admin give commands

Functions under the lifesteal namespace give empty heart bottles and bottled hearts to players on request.

  5. Nine new advancements

Nine advancements tied to the new mechanics appear in the adventure tab, marking the first heart transfers and bottle use.

Questions

Does Lifesteal need to be installed on the client?

No. It is required on the server and optional for players.

Which loaders does Lifesteal support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The latest file for each loader is 1.0.8+mod for 26.1.2, released 2026-06-23.

Can a player lose a heart from a fall or lava?

Yes. Environmental deaths count, so a player who dies that way also loses a heart to the killer or environment.

What the author says

This pack adds the classic lifesteal mechanics as well as more advancements and a natural way to trade hearts with others, and is playable on a completely vanilla world! (Note: Enviromental deaths do not count. Just because you forgot your elytra or your shield, doesn't mean you lose a valuable heart!)
