Legacy Display

by SmushyTaco

With Legacy Display, the Minecraft HUD can show an older style of overlay, including FPS, coordinates, the game version and chunk updates on screen.

FabricClient-side onlyApache License 2.0Open source1.16.5 – 26.2

What it does

Legacy Display brings back legacy display elements of Minecraft, such as the title screen, the loading screen, an FPS readout, a chunk update counter, a version label and a coordinates display. Each element can be turned on or off separately, and the config file lets players adjust the layout to match a classic look.

The mod needs Fabric API, Fabric Language Kotlin and oωo (owo-lib) to run, and Mod Menu adds an in-game settings screen when installed. Because only the client draws these elements, the server does not need it. Builds are published for Fabric alone, across 25 release versions 1.16.5 – 26.2, and the code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

Its source code and issue tracker are public. The author asks that users first check whether a problem comes from another mod, since some chunk update counts shift when other mods change related code. The author has said that a port to another loader is welcome and does not need permission.

Key features

  1. Legacy title and loading screens

The title screen and loading screen are redrawn in the style of older Minecraft versions.

  2. FPS and chunk update display

A frame rate readout and a counter for chunk updates are drawn on the HUD.

  3. Version and coordinates overlay

The game version and the player's coordinates can be shown as text on screen, each toggled separately.

  4. Customizable config

Position, colors and which elements appear are set in a config file, so the overlay can be adjusted without code.

How it compares

Full comparison

FPS - Display is client-side only, open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and runs on Fabric and Quilt across 1.8.9 – 26.3, so it covers a wider version range than Legacy Display. Coordinates Display is client-side only, covers 1.21.4 alone and is licensed as All rights reserved. Legacy Display covers 25 versions with Fabric files and is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

Questions

Does Legacy Display need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is required, along with Fabric Language Kotlin and oωo (owo-lib). Mod Menu is optional and adds a settings screen.

Does the server need Legacy Display?

No. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game.

Why do chunk update numbers look wrong with other mods?

The author notes that some mods change related code, so the chunk update count can change. Reports of this kind should go to the developer of the other mod.
