Lava Pockets Removed

by Luc1fer1o

Lava Pockets Removed stops the Nether from placing its tiny single-block lava springs during world generation.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21.1

What it does

The mod changes one step of Nether generation: the placement of single-block lava spring pockets, which the vanilla lava spring placement logic produces. It cancels only that Nether lava spring placement and does not replace biome data, so the rest of the Nether terrain, including lava oceans and other lava features, is generated as usual.

Because biome feature lists are left untouched, other mods that add or reorder their own Nether biome features keep working normally, which helps custom Nether biome world-generation mods stay compatible. The change applies to Nether chunks generated after the mod is installed; lava pockets already present in generated chunks are removed when those chunks are regenerated.

The mod is server-side only, so it is installed in the server's NeoForge mods folder before new Nether chunks are generated, and players join without installing it. It runs on dedicated servers and in singleplayer. Files are published for NeoForge 1.21.1 only, with the 1.0.0 release dated 2026-07-05. The mod is licensed as All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Single-block lava pockets removed

Tiny 1x1 lava spring pockets are no longer placed during Nether world generation.

  2. Other lava features untouched

Nether lava oceans and other lava features still generate as they normally do.

  3. No biome list edits

The change cancels a single placement step rather than rewriting biome data, so other world-gen mods can still add or reorder their own features.

  4. Applies to new chunks

Only Nether chunks generated after the change are affected, and existing pockets are removed in chunks that generate again.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack builders on NeoForge 1.21.1 who want fewer single-block lava springs in the Nether and need other Nether world-gen mods to keep their biome features intact.

Questions

Does Lava Pockets Removed need to be installed on clients?

No. Players join without it, since only the server has to run the mod. The server alone needs the mod.

Will existing Nether lava pockets disappear?

Only in chunks that are generated after the mod is installed. Pockets in chunks that already exist are removed when those chunks generate again.

Does the mod work with custom Nether biome mods?

Yes. It cancels one placement step and does not edit biome feature lists, so other biome mods can add or reorder their features normally.

What the author says

Lava Pockets Removed is a small NeoForge mod that prevents the Nether's tiny 1x1 lava pocket springs from generating. The mod targets the vanilla lava spring placement logic directly through SpringFeature#place. Because it cancels only Nether lava spring placement instead of replacing biome data, other mods can still…
