Item Holograms
by mattseq
Item Holograms shows a floating label above dropped items on the client, with the item name, stack count and optional tooltips.
What it does
When an item lies on the ground, the mod can draw a hologram above it that lists the item name and how many items the stack holds. Label display distance controls how far away the labels remain readable, and the tooltip display can be switched on or off from the config. Holograms are drawn only where the player can see them, so labels hidden behind blocks or outside the view are skipped.
Minimal Mode narrows the labels further. Only the hologram of the item the player is looking at, or of the item they are both looking at while sneaking, is shown, which reduces clutter in areas with many drops. Labels are cached after a raytrace, which keeps rendering cheap on busy worlds. Item Holograms is open source under the MIT License, is published for Fabric and Forge, and runs on the client alone, so players join servers without installing anything extra.
The files cover 1.19.2, 1.19.3, 1.19.4 and 1.20.1. The latest Fabric build is 4.0.0-1.20.1 for 1.20.1, and the latest Forge build is 4.0.0-1.19.2 for 1.19.4. The source code and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Item name and stack count
Each dropped item can show its name and the number of items in its stack above it, within a set radius.
Minimal mode
Only the hologram of the item under the player's crosshair is shown, which keeps dense drops readable.
Frustum culling
Holograms are rendered only within the player's field of view, and labels behind objects are not drawn.
Tooltips and distance
Tooltips can be turned on or off, and the distance at which labels appear is adjustable in the config.
