Improved Wolf AI

by ryankshah

Improved Wolf AI changes how tamed wolves hunt, fetch and carry items, so a wolf can finish a fight and bring back what it killed.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.20.6

What it does

Vanilla wolves keep attacking after their target dies, and any loot they leave behind can despawn before the player reaches it. This mod changes those routines. A wolf stops attacking once the target is dead, lunges at the corpse and grabs the meat, then brings it back to the owner. Dropped items near a crouching player can be sent to the wolf for fetching, and the wolf shows the carried item in its mouth.

The mod adds a hostile detection routine: a wolf growls when hostile mobs are nearby, which works as an early warning in caves or at night. Growling does not interrupt combat or other behaviors. Detection ranges, the crouch signal, the fetch timing and the growl timing can be adjusted, and every feature can be switched on or off in the config file. It is published for Forge and NeoForge, with files for 1.20.1 – 1.20.6, and both the server and every player need it.

Cleaning up after a fight

Wolves gather meat and dropped items near the player, so loot is not left to despawn.

Cave and night travel

The growl warns the player about hostile mobs nearby while exploring dark areas.

Who it’s for: Players who keep tamed wolves as companions and want them to do more than fight, and server owners who want to tune wolf behavior through the config file.

What the author says

Wolves in vanilla are kind of useless. They attack stuff, sure, but then they just stand there while the loot despawns. This mod fixes that. Smart Hunting - Wolves stop attacking once the target is dead. No more watching your wolf lunge at a corpse.
