Hotbar Helper

by rollercobester1

Hotbar Helper refills a hotbar slot as soon as its stack runs out, so building, eating and throwing continue without opening the inventory.

What it does

When a stack in a hotbar slot is used up, the mod pulls a matching item from the inventory into that slot. Block placement, item drops and tool use all trigger the refill, so the player keeps the same slot selected and does not need to open a menu. The mod is client-side only: only the client needs it, and a server can run without it.

Hotbar Helper also selects the suitable tool for the block a player starts breaking. Pressing the attack key on a block picks the matching pick, shovel or axe from the hotbar, and after the block breaks the original slot is selected again. Requires Fabric API. The code is licensed under CC0 1.0 Universal, and the project is open source. Files are published for Fabric only, across 12 release versions, with 1.0.0 for 1.21.11 as the latest build.

Key features

  1. Automatic hotbar refill

An emptied hotbar slot is filled from the inventory right away, with no key press and no screen opened.

  2. Suitable tool selection

Starting to break a block switches the hotbar to the tool suited to that block.

  3. Return to original slot

After breaking finishes, the selection goes back to the slot the player was holding before.

  4. Works while building and eating

Placing blocks, throwing items and eating food all trigger a refill from the inventory.

Use cases

Building with blocks

A builder who places a long run of one block type keeps the slot stocked without reaching for the inventory.

Switching between pick and shovel

Breaking stone with a pickaxe and dirt with a shovel happens without pressing a hotbar key for each tool.

Who it’s for: Players who build, break blocks or fight often and want hotbar items to stay stocked. Clients on Fabric are the main audience, since no server-side install is needed.

How it compares

Full comparison

AutoInventorySorter is a Fabric client-side mod released under the MIT License and covers 1.21.5 – 1.21.11, so it targets a narrower span of builds than Hotbar Helper, which is open source under CC0 1.0 Universal. Hotbar Tap is client-side only as well and also covers 1.21 – 1.21.5, but its code is under All rights reserved, so it is not open source. Simple Hotbar Switcher is built for 1.21.11 alone and can be installed on the client, the server, or both.
