Hedge's Bestiary

by hedg3e

Hedge's Bestiary adds fantastical creatures to world generation, most of them original designs, and lets players tame many of them.

What it does

Most of the creatures are original, and the mod's main focus is new mobs placed in the world. Taming is the core progression: players tame creatures, breed them, and turn eggs into treats that make tamed animals stronger. Tamed animals can gather resources or guard a base, so the variety of uses grows with the roster.

Modpack creators can change whether the bulk of the mobs can be tamed through the mod's config file. An in-game guide built with Patchouli describes the content, so players can look up creatures without leaving the game. Patchouli is an optional dependency that enables the guide.

Files are published for Forge 1.20.1 only, with 1.0.7 as the latest release from 2026-09-30. The mod is released under the MIT License and is open source. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. Work on a port for another loader is under way, and a Fabric version is planned, but neither is available yet.

Key features

  1. Original fantastical creatures

New mobs are added to the world, mostly original designs that are not taken from vanilla or other mods.

  2. Taming and breeding

Players tame creatures and breed them, and eggs can be turned into treats that make tamed animals stronger.

  3. Configurable tamability

A config option lets modpack creators decide whether the bulk of the mobs can be tamed.

  4. Tamed animal roles

Tamed creatures can gather resources or guard bases, which gives them practical roles beyond combat.
