Greenlight

by FlashyReese

Greenlight is a library that lets a server allow specific client tweaks on multiplayer, and it adds no visible feature of its own.

FabricNeoForgeClient-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.17 – 26.3

What it does

Greenlight lets servers and client mods agree on which client-side features are permitted. Some of those features are harmless cosmetics, while others can change gameplay, such as removing fog, altering darkness, or exposing information players are not expected to have. Compatible mods stay in their default vanilla-safe state and enable a feature only after the server grants permission.

A server publishes its policy through its server resource pack, with one JSON file per feature. Neither a server-side Greenlight mod nor any Paper, Fabric, NeoForge or Bukkit plugin is needed to send those files. Only policy from a resource pack that the game labels as originating from the current server is trusted, so a local pack with the same files has no effect. Permissions are dropped when the player leaves the server, and a server can also set limits that the client mod clamps to. Players keep their own local settings, and Greenlight never forces a feature on.

Greenlight is a client-side only library for Fabric and NeoForge, released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and it is open source. Its files are published for game versions 1.17 – 26.3, with the latest Fabric and NeoForge builds targeting 26.3. Installing it alone changes nothing, so it is only needed when a mod states that it supports or requires Greenlight.

Key features

  1. Server-defined permissions

The server lists which features are allowed, and compatible client mods read that list before enabling anything.

  2. Local settings kept

A player can still keep personal configuration for each feature, with the server permission acting as a ceiling.

  3. Denied by default

Where a server provides no policy for a feature on multiplayer, compatible mods treat that feature as denied.

Questions

Does a local resource pack with Greenlight files work?

No. Greenlight trusts only policy from resource packs the game marks as coming from the current server, so a local pack with the same files does nothing.

What happens if a player declines the optional server pack?

Greenlight sees no trusted policy, so compatible features stay denied. Permissions are also removed when the player leaves the server.

Which mods need Greenlight, and does it change the game alone?

Greenlight is only needed by mods that declare support for it. On its own, the library does not alter gameplay.

What the author says

Greenlight is a library mod. It does not add a menu, a feature toggle, or any visible gameplay change by itself. Install it when another mod says it supports or requires Greenlight.
