Great Big World
Great Big World is a Fabric world generation mod that reworks the Overworld toward an older feel and adds a second dimension called Alterworld.
What it does
The mod strips the Overworld of many features that its author considers unnecessary, and includes many structures, biomes and natural blocks such as granite, diorite and andesite. Ancient Cities remain a core part of the progression through the dimensions. Alterworld is a new alternate dimension that keeps many features of modern Minecraft and several older ones, including villages and copper, plus Cherry Groves variant mobs. Players start in the Overworld and enter Alterworld in one of two ways: a temporary route through Fractured Portals in a temple structure, or a permanent one.
The mod is built as an alternate timeline for modern Minecraft, aimed at players who want a classic, simple sandbox survival game as well as those who prefer a more complex progression. It is packaged with Lithostitched, and the author describes the package as a collection of mods that share one reimagining goal under new design philosophies. Client and server need the same build. Files exist for 1.20.6, 1.21.1, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.8, 1.21.10 and 1.21.11, the latest being 1.0.4+1.21.11 for 1.21.11, released 2026-08-23. The mod is not open source and is licensed as All rights reserved.
Key features
Knowledge system
A knowledge system tracks what a player has learned, and other systems in the mod draw on it.
Fractured Portals
A temple structure holds an activation block, and each player can brush it once to open a portal into Alterworld.
Temporary Alterworld visits
Entering a fractured portal breaks the path behind the player and gives a few minutes to explore Alterworld before the player is sent back.
Structure trigger and mappings
A structure trigger system and a tag-like mappings system let the mod's features respond to placed structures and blocks.
