Gravel Carts

by firenh

Gravel Carts changes how far a minecart can go on a rail, using the blocks placed under the rail to raise its top speed.

FabricServer-side onlyGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.18.2 – 1.19

What it does

Rails laid over gravel, cobbled deepslate or raw gold give carts a higher maximum speed than vanilla. Cobbled deepslate raises the limit to a higher multiple of the normal value, gravel to a larger multiple still, and raw gold to the largest. A second layer of gravel under the first adds more speed again, so a cart on gold over two gravel layers reaches the highest multiple the mod allows.

The blocks that count toward speed are set with block tags, and the number of layers is controlled by the server's config file. A layer count of zero turns the feature off, and a negative value removes the limit. The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it. The code is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and files target the Fabric loader for 1.18.2 – 1.19.

Key features

  1. Speed by base block

The material under a rail sets the cart's maximum speed, with cobbled deepslate, gravel and raw gold each giving a different multiplier.

  2. Stacked layers

Placing a second layer of gravel under the rail block adds speed again, up to the layer limit set in the config.

  3. Tag-based block list

The blocks that affect speed are defined with block tags, so server owners can change the list without editing code.

  4. Configurable layer count

The config sets how many layers are counted, with zero disabling the feature and a negative value allowing unlimited layers.

What the author says

In Minecraft, there are minecarts, which are an obsolete form of transportation. Nearly every type of transportation in the game is better than it--elytras, horses, boats (especially on ice), and even sprint-jumping with a block above your head. That being said, minecarts do have a very good application at the…
