Friend Finder
by jamessparkes
Players who lose track of a friend in a large world can use Friend Finder, a Fabric overlay that shows the direction and distance to the nearest other player.
What it does
With Friend Finder installed, a small message above the hotbar shows the angle the player must turn to face the nearest other player, the horizontal distance in blocks, and the height difference, marked with a plus or minus sign when the friend is above or below. Tracking picks the nearest player automatically and shows the friend's username, so a player who asks in chat where a friend is can get an answer without typing coordinates.
The display is built to stay out of the way: text is drawn without a background panel, and pressing the F key turns the overlay on or off instantly. The mod only needs to be installed on the client, so players can use it on a server or in a single-player world without the server owner changing anything. Friend Finder is not open source and is released under All rights reserved, with builds for 1.21.5 only.
Key features
Directional tracking
The overlay gives the angle in degrees that the player must turn to face the tracked friend.
Distance and height readout
Horizontal distance is shown in blocks, and the vertical difference is shown with a sign for friends above or below.
Automatic nearest-player tracking
The mod follows the nearest player without any setup, and displays that player's username.
Instant F key toggle
Pressing F switches the on-screen text off or on at once, keeping the screen clear when it is not needed.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
Use cases
Meeting up on a server
Players who have split up on a multiplayer server can use the bearing and distance to reach each other without typing coordinates in chat.
Large survival worlds
In a big single-player world, the readout helps locate a companion who has wandered off to another area.
Who it’s for: Players who share a world or server with friends and want a simple way to find each other. The mod suits builds in progress and exploration, and it needs nothing on the server side.
How it compares
One eye stronghold finder is a client-side Fabric mod under the MIT License, and it is open source, so it locates strongholds rather than players. Pitch Display is client-side only and released under the MIT License, but it shows the pitch of the view. Friend Finder is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.
