Flashlight
by CreepermeYT
With Flashlight, a held light item lets players aim a beam of light ahead of them, and it can be crafted from iron, redstone and a spyglass.
What it does
Flashlight adds a utility item that is held in the main hand and turned on and off with the right mouse button. The crafting recipe takes four iron ingredients, one redstone block and a spyglass, and the crafting recipe gives a knowledge book in some builds. While the light is lit, particles trace the path of the beam, and the spyglass accessory works alongside it. Zoom is handled well, and the focus and width of the beam adjust depending on how far the player aims.
The item loses durability over time and breaks after about five minutes, but only on the 1.21.4 build. Behavior differs between the two game versions: the 1.20.1 build has its own focus distance settings, and light lasts 75% longer on one tier, 50% on another and 25% on a third, with the 1.20.1 build reaching roughly 2.1 minutes to 15 minutes of use depending on the flashlight. The mod is built as a datapack and mod that works server-side, so one installation on the server is enough for every player to use it.
Flashlight is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files for 1.20.1 and 1.21.4. The server must run it, while players may leave it out. The code is released under the MIT License and is not open source.

How it compares
Spyglass Improvements is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, client-side only, and available for 1.18.1 – 26.2 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. Vanilla Zoom is client-side only, covers 1.18.2 – 26.3 on the same four loaders, and is licensed under All rights reserved. Flashlight is server required with the client optional and does not cover the same zoom behavior across that range.
