Fast Async Backups

by abhinavkumarmauryax

Fast Async Backups lets server owners and operators create compressed zip copies of a whole world folder with a single command while the server keeps running.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT License1.21.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Each backup copies the world into a temporary directory first, so file locks held by other mods such as Sable do not interfere, and then compresses that clean copy into a zip file in a backup folder beside the world folders. Failed copies are retried up to five times with increasing backoff. Backups run on a separate thread, which keeps the server responsive during the work, and players see progress and completion messages broadcast server-wide.

Old archives are removed automatically once the number of stored backups passes a limit. That limit is set with a command or in a JSON config file at backup/backup_config.json inside the server directory, which is created on first use. Names are validated to block path traversal. The mod is built to work alongside Sable, Aeronautics and C2ME-related content, and it requires no configuration to get started. Players need operator permissions to run its commands.

Key features

  1. Instant zip backups

A single command produces a compressed zip of the full world folder, named by a fixed format.

  2. Non-blocking copies

Backups run asynchronously, so the server does not freeze while an archive is being written.

  3. Automatic rotation

Older backups are pruned once the configured limit is exceeded, so the disk does not fill up.

  4. Adjustable limit

The backup limit can be changed in-game with a command or edited directly in the JSON config file.

Use cases

Recovering from corruption

A world damaged by a faulty mod, a power outage or a bad edit with WorldEdit can be rolled back to a recent archive.

Safe testing

A backup taken before installing or changing mods gives a known copy to return to.

Who it’s for: The mod suits server owners and operators who want regular world archives without stopping the server or setting up external tools.
