Excavators

by Pepsied

Excavators is a Technology mod that automates clearing a rectangular area by mining it block by block with a pickaxe held in a panel.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT License1.21.2 – 26.2

What it does

An excavator works through a selected area on its own once it is set up. The area is defined by three slots: the first sets the length, the second the height and the third the width. The machine always works forward along the length, moves left across the width, and then steps down one layer at a time through the height. Clearing the first three slots resets progress, and adjusting the area is possible as long as the machine has not finished.

The excavator uses a pickaxe placed in the center panel, and the pickaxe is never destroyed. When it loses durability it is only brought down to one use left. The machine halts when the pickaxe needs a repair or when a block such as bedrock is beyond what the tool can handle. Work resumes once the pickaxe is repaired or the block is unblocked, and progress is kept until the pickaxe is returned, so a pause is as simple as taking it out.

The server must run the mod, while players may leave it out, so only the server side needs it installed. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and the data pack form is also listed. The latest builds target 26.2 and cover 1.21.2 – 26.2 across 14 release versions. The mod is released under the MIT License but is not open source.

Key features

  1. Automated area clearing

The excavator clears an entire selected area without a player mining each block by hand.

  2. Three-slot area setup

Length, height and width are set through three slots, and the selection can be seen inside the machine before work starts.

  3. Pickaxe handling

The tool sits in the center panel and is never destroyed, so work stops for repair instead of breaking the pickaxe.

  4. Fluid clearing

Lava, water and other fluids can be cleared along with solid blocks.

  5. Capped area size

Each excavation has a fixed maximum of 64x64x64 blocks, so very large areas are split into smaller runs.

  6. Pause and resume

Taking the pickaxe out pauses the excavator, and it continues from the same point after the pickaxe is returned.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who clear large areas of terrain and want a machine to do the repetitive mining, and server owners who want to offer that automation on a shared world.

Questions

Does Excavators need to be installed on the server?

Yes. The server must run the mod, so it has to be installed there. Players may add it for the client side, but they do not have to.

Which loaders does Excavators support?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with the latest build 1.0.1+mod for 26.2 on each loader.

What happens when the pickaxe breaks?

The pickaxe is never destroyed. When it runs low it is brought down to one use left, and the excavator stops until it is repaired.
