Enhanced Packet Compression
by Blobanium
Enhanced Packet Compression lets server owners set the compression level applied to network packets, on top of vanilla's size threshold.
What it does
Vanilla Minecraft servers compress packets that exceed a size threshold, which conserves bandwidth and helps players on slower connections. The network-compression-threshold setting in server.properties controls that behavior. This mod adds a further control: the compression level itself can be adjusted, which suits servers with large player counts.
Compression can lower CPU load at a slight cost in network bandwidth, but the result depends on how it is configured. The author designed the mod for servers, and running it on the client side is not recommended. Because it changes packets, it may trigger anti-cheat systems in a small number of cases. Architectury API is required. Files are published for Fabric and NeoForge, covering 1.0 – 1.21.1 across 88 release versions, with 0.0.3-Beta for 1.21.1 as the latest file. The mod is open source under the MIT License.
Key features
Compression level control
The compression level applied to outgoing packets can be set, separate from the size threshold vanilla uses.
Size threshold kept
Packets above the threshold are still compressed, so the existing server.properties behavior remains the starting point.
Server-side operation
Vanilla clients can join a server running the mod, because the change applies to what the server sends.
Bandwidth and CPU tradeoff
Higher or lower levels shift load between network bandwidth and processor time, depending on the server's hardware.

Use cases
Large player counts
Servers with many connected players can tune compression to manage bandwidth across all of them.
Slower player connections
Adjusting the level can help players with slower connections receive data more smoothly.
Who it’s for: Server owners who want more control over network traffic than the vanilla compression threshold provides.
How it compares
LinearReader is a server-side only mod under the MIT License, published for 1.20 – 26.3 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, so it covers a different part of the network stack. Disconnect Packet Fix is also server-side only and MIT licensed, but targets 1.21 – 26.3 on Fabric and NeoForge and addresses disconnect handling instead of compression.
