Encumbered (Player Weight)

by Khofo

Encumbered, a NeoForge mod for 1.21.1, makes carried weight slow players down once their inventory passes configurable thresholds.

NeoForgeClient and serverMIT License1.21.1

What it does

Players accumulate weight from the items they carry, and each item weight can be set in a JSON file. Heavier loads reduce movement, and past the limits a player becomes over encumbered and moves barely at all, can only sprint briefly, and jumps and swims more slowly. A weight indicator icon in a GUI shows how close the player is to the next threshold. Riding entities and gliding with an elytra also take the carried weight into account.

The mod supports multiplayer, and it can count the contents of shulker boxes and some backpack mods, including Sophisticated Backpacks. Further support for Curios slot backpacks is listed among its features. Weights and thresholds are set in configuration, and a datapack can override the values or add weights for another mod's items, with the datapack placed in the world's datapacks folder. Encumbered is published for NeoForge on 1.21.1 only, with the latest file dated 2025-04-07, and it runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. The code is released under the MIT License, and the project is not open source.

Key features

  1. Configurable item weights

Each item's weight is set in a JSON file, and a datapack can replace the values or add entries for other mods' items.

  2. Encumbrance thresholds

Weight limits that slow movement, sprinting and jumping can be adjusted in configuration, with a UI to edit them.

  3. Weight indicator GUI

An inventory icon shows the current load so players can see how close they are to the next threshold.

  4. Extra carrying capacity

Shulker boxes and supported backpack mods count toward the load, and riding and elytra flight are affected as well.

How it compares

Full comparison

Stamina and Weight is a NeoForge mod for 1.21.1 that is also client and server, but it is released under All rights reserved and is not open source. Fair Sophisticated Backpacks is server-side only on NeoForge 1.21.1 with the same All rights reserved license, so players join without installing it. MT Inventory Weight is open source under CC0 1.0 Universal and runs on client and server across Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.20 – 26.1.2, a much wider version range than Encumbered's single 1.21.1 file.

Questions

Which loader does Encumbered need?

Encumbered is published for NeoForge only. Its latest file targets 1.21.1, and no Fabric or Forge files are listed.

Does the server need Encumbered installed?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Can the weight values be changed?

Yes. Item weights are read from a JSON file and can be overridden with a datapack placed in the world's datapacks folder.

What the author says

Over Encumbered: You can barely move (no sprinting, jumping, slower movement, and sinking in fluids). In order to modify weight values, you must create a datapack to override or add your own mod's weight values. The datapack should be dropped in the world's datapacks folder.
