Dragon Mounts: Legacy
by kay9
With Dragon Mounts: Legacy installed, a dragon egg hatches into a tamed creature that players can raise, ride and equip.
What it does
The mod lets players raise dragons from eggs and ride them through the sky. Breeds are defined through Minecraft's datapack system and file structures, so new breeds, traits, attributes, behaviors, eggs and textures can be added without writing code. The description calls this suited to themed modpacks.
Dragon Mounts: Legacy runs on Forge only and needs both the server and every player to have it, because the environment is client and server. Files exist for 1.18.2, 1.19.2, 1.19.4, 1.20.1, 1.21 and 1.21.1, with 1.21-1.2.5-beta for 1.21.1 as the latest build, dated 2024-08-14 on the beta channel. The code is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only.
Six catalog mods require Dragon Mounts: Legacy, including Dragon Mounts Patches, Dragon Mounts: More Dragons, Ninjago: Elements Unleashed (Palladium addon), Dragon Mounts Legacy: Dragon Storage and Dragon Mounts Legacy: Duel Saddle Ridding.

Use cases
Themed modpacks
Pack makers can define custom breeds that match a setting without any Java code.
Survival progression
Raised dragons give players a mount and an ally that changes how they explore.
Who it’s for: Players who want a tameable, rideable dragon, and pack authors who need custom creature breeds defined through datapacks rather than code.
How it compares
Dragon Mounts 2 is also open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, but it targets Forge 1.11.2 – 1.12.2 with the client and server environment. Tamable Dragon is client and server as well, yet it is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 and is released under All rights reserved. Dragon Mounts Datapack needs the server, with the client optional, and covers 1.19 – 1.21.8 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt.
